MSD, COMP Cams major contributors to this year's Summit SuperSeries prize dragster

Wednesday, 17 September 2014

As the battle for the Summit SuperSeries World Championship draws near, the excitement is building, not only for the opportunity to take home a championship, but for racers to have an opportunity to claim one of the biggest prize packages in drag racing. As we get closer to the World Finals, we dig deeper into the parts and pieces that make up one of the biggest elements of the Summit SuperSeries prize package – the SuperSeries Prize Dragster – by visiting two of the biggest contributors this season, COMP Cams and MSD.

*Over the coming weeks the International Hot Rod Association will be taking an in-depth look at the parts and the people that make the Summit SuperSeries prize package the greatest prize package in all of motorsports. The Summit SuperSeries winners in Top ET, Mod ET and Junior Dragster at the Summit World Finals will each take home an elaborate prize package courtesy of the many great companies that remain dedicated to the grassroots racer. Thank you to all of our great sponsors and friends who help make this incredible program possible*

COMP Cams

COMP Cams products a vital component to Summit SuperSeries Dragster

The COMP Cams belt drive kit represent the ultimate in cam timing systems, providing competition engine builders with the most accurate valve train components available today. These drives are designed to absorb a significant amount of crankshaft harmonics, which will affect valve motion if they reach the valvetrain. These systems require less power to operate than conventional belt drives, and are proven to be more durable than either gear or chain drives.

COMP Cams Belt Drive

The Summit Super Series championship dragster will feature a complete 572" Big Block Chevy that will include many COMP products including the COMP Cams Endure-X Roller Lifters. Patented Endure-X roller lifters from COMP Cams set the standards for solid roller lifter technology. These lifters are .904" in diameter and are of mechanical roller design. These Endure-X roller lifters are fully heat-treated, machined to ultra-high tolerances, and fully rebuildable.

COMP Cams has also supplied their Shaft Mount Aluminum Rocker Arms for the Trick Flow engine build. These shaft style rockers feature one of the most cost-effective ways to increase horsepower.

Comp Cams Rocker Arms

These shaft rockers were designed using the latest in computer software and engineering. They center the roller tip over the valve tip at the correct time so that the roller tip is never more than 0.020 in. off-center of the valve tip. At the greatest load point, the roller tip contact is on the center of the valve. At valve closing, the roller tip contact is slightly behind the valve centerline. When the valve is at full open, the tip contact is slightly behind the centerline of the valve. The results are more horsepower and better performance.

MSD

MSD powers 2014 Summit SuperSeries Dragster

MSD is supplying the Power Grid 7 ignition system for the Summit SuperSeries grand prize dragster. These ignition boxes pack high power output and when used with the Power Grid 7 system controller, these USB-compatible boxes offer advanced programming for ultimate control over RPM and timing.

The MSD controller is the brains behind the entire Power Grid system and can be used with any MSD ignition or Pro Mag to provide advanced ignition tuning capabilities. While they are compatible with all MSD ignition boxes, they have been specially designed to mount on top of the Power Grid 7 ignition box. This ignition box and grid controller features capacitive discharge, USB connection for ease of programming, timing based on engine RPM and gear value and advanced individual cylinder timing based on gear or time. There are also shift light settings for each gear.

MSD Power Grid

Ignition data acquisition accepts multiple runs. They provide five retard stages for nitrous and four steps of RPM limits for burnouts, spool, launch and overrev. MSD Power Grid 7 ignition boxes’ output switch can be set on RPM, pressure or time.

Other MSD components on the Summit SuperSeries prize dragster include:

MSD HVC-2 COIL

The HVC-2 coils utilize an iron Ucore design with a segmented bobbin for improved voltage distribution. The bobbin is molded from Dupont Rynite FR946 material. That means it has incredible dielectric capabilities at high temperatures.

MSD HVC-2

The housing features far-spaced brass primary terminals, and a well-protected secondary tower for increased spark isolation. They're designed for use with MSD 7 Series ignitions.

MSD Pro-Billet Distributor

The unique design of MSD's Pro-Billet crank trigger distributors fits tight intake systems while still transferring the high voltage of the MSD racing ignition to the spark plugs. The oversized distributer shaft is QPQ-coated for friction reduction and is guided by a sealed ball-bearing assembly at the top and an extra-long sintered bushing at the bottom for smooth operation and lifelong reliability. For high rpm stability, the housings are CNC-machined from solid billet 6061-T6 aluminum that is machined to within 0.001 in. for absolute accuracy. These distributors have a low-profile Rynite cap assembly to clear busy intake setups.

MSD Pro-Billet

The low design is accomplished because the only thing under the cap is a rotor. The high voltage carrying capabilities are the result of several features, including a large diameter cap with wide spaced terminals, and an injection-molded Rynite rotor with thick vanes to stir up the air inside the cap. The high dielectric Rynite base also prevents arcing to the billet housing. These distributors don't have an advance assembly or pickup, so they must be used with a crank trigger. They also require the use of a separate ignition box, such as an MSD 6, 7, 8, or 10 Series ignition.

MSD Flying Magnet Crank Trigger

MSD's Flying Magnet crank triggers use four magnets permanently embedded in an aluminum wheel. As the crank rotates, the magnets pass a non-magnetic pickup, which triggers the ignition. These MSD systems include a trigger wheel, pickup, CNC-machined aluminum mounting bracket, and hardware

This "flying magnet" design produces accurate trigger signals and the non-magnetic pick-up cannot be false triggered. Each Flying Magnet Crank Trigger includes a two piece mounting bracket for the non-magnetic pick-up that in most cases will work on either the passenger side or driver’s side of the engine.

MSD Flying Magnet

The CNC-machined aluminum bracket securely holds the pick-up in place and is slotted to provide a wide range of timing adjustment. Spacers are included so you can mount the bracket on engines with standard motor mounts or engines with a .25" motor plate. These systems will trigger MSD 6,7,8 and 10 Series Ignitions and all MSD Timing Accessories.
